Race against diabetes

IN AN effort to raise awareness on diabetes and the management of the disease, the Race to Goal 2010 was held at Taman Tasik Lembah Kiara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur recently.

Residents living nearby arrived early in the morning to participate in event held to mark World Diabetes Day on Nov 14.

The event, jointly organised by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp (MSD) and Malaysian Diabetes Associa-tion (PDM), was to drive home the message that it was possible for diabetes sufferers to live well with the right mental attitude and a healthy lifestyle.

The half-day event had fun-filled and educational activities centring on three key pillars — appropriate health measures and regular checks, healthy diet and regular exercise.

A health talk by consultant physician and endocrinologist Dr Hew Fen Lee on “Living Well with Diabetes” gave attendees tips and valuable information on the disease.

Popular chef Amy Beh then cooked up a storm with her “Healthy Cook Out” session. She concocted Salad on the Go and Stir Fry Chicken and Mushroom dishes.

mYoga shared some well-co-ordinated exercise tips during the “Fitting in Fitness” activity.

The day’s activities included games such as Wheel of Health, 3D Jigsaw Puzzle, Create a Plate, Guess the Calories, Get Fit at Home as well as Snakes & Ladders.

According to MSD business unit leader Sunny Lim, Race to Goal is the fourth educational event held as part of the company’s ongoing diabetes awareness campaign themed Living Well with Diabetes.

Currently, an estimated 1.4 million Malaysians or one in six adults above 30 years old have diabetes.

He said the increasing prevalence of diabetes in Malaysia was a compelling reason to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

“We want to remind the people that a disciplined approach in diabetes management can go a long way in preventing future complications and help people enjoy a good life.

“We hope the event will encourage Malaysians with diabetes to strive towards a lower glucose level and a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Also present at the event was PDM secretary-general Datuk Rahimah Ahmad, who said numerous statistics had shown that diabetes was steadily growing in the region and globally.

“Given the drastic change in our modern lifestyle, we need to understand that diabetes is a major health problem.

“We need to remind people that healthy lifestyle changes are important in preventing and managing Type 2 diabetes, which is common and affects around 90% of patients worldwide,” she said.

The MSD Living Well with Diabetes campaign began in 2007 with the introduction of sugar lite teh tarik to promote the importance of low sugar diet.

It was followed by workshops and activities focusing on dietary and nutritional requirements before the Race to Goal was introduced in 2009.

This year an additional small scale roadshow will be held on Nov 7 at Kompleks Sukan MPSJ in Subang Jaya to educate the community on diabetes management and healthy living.
